European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) and ECDL Advanced

ECDL

ECDL has been specially designed for people that are new to computers.  It has a flexible and easy to follow way of learning.  You can learn at your own pace and receive plenty of help and support throughout the process.

Once you've got ECDL you'll discover a new found confidence in using computers that means there are thousands of jobs and career opportunities that open up for you.  It consists of seven topic areas called modules.

Basic Concepts of IT

  • Helps you feel comfortable with what makes a computer work by understanding what different objects are and the terminology used.

Using the Computer and Managing Files

  • Lets you explore the computer and the icons on your screen - this includes how to save documents.... and find them again!

Word Processing

  • Learn the skills you need to write documents for letters and reports and how you can make them look professional.

Spreadsheets

  • Develop the skills you need to do some 'number crunching' with the computer doing the hard work.  You'll also learn how to create whizzy graphs and tables for reports.

Database

  • Don't think about a database as a 'techie' tool.  Many people already use on in one way or another - it's just a way of storing information in an effective way.  This covers what databases do and how you can set one up.

Presentation

  • Create your own presentation templates and learn how to create animated slides, include pictures and everything else that can make a presentation look great.  Don't worry - you will just be learning how to create the templates and won't need to get up and do a presentation!

Information and communication

  • Gain the skills you need to use the internet effectively by using search engines to find information quickly and how to safely surf the web.  The module also covers how to send and receive emails.

All ECDL courses are home study and are provided with online manuals.  All ECDL exams are also online.  For further information contact the learning centre.

ECDL Advanced

The Advanced ECDL qualification is designed to progress the computer skills from the ECDL to the next level.

Each module is separately certificated (as opposed to one certificate for seven modules in ECDL) and you can choose to undertake one module or any combination of modules.

Before embarking on Advanced ECDL you should have attained certification in ECDL.

Advanced modules include:

  • Word Processing

  • Spreadsheet

  • Database

  • Presentation
